Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits: Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and the mischievous Peter. They lived with their mother in a cozy burrow under the roots of a big tree.
One sunny morning, Mrs. Rabbit warned her children, “You may play in the fields or by the brook, but don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s garden. Your father had an unfortunate encounter there.” The little rabbits promised to behave. But as soon as their mother left to fetch groceries, Peter’s curiosity got the better of him.
While Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail collected blackberries, Peter squeezed under the garden gate. His eyes sparkled at the sight of the lush, green vegetables. “Just a nibble won’t hurt,” he thought, plucking a crisp radish. Then he moved on to the lettuce and beans, stuffing his little belly.
Peter was so lost in his feast that he didn’t notice the heavy footsteps until it was too late. “Hey! You there!” bellowed Mr. McGregor. Peter froze, wide-eyed. In an instant, he bolted through the rows of cabbages, Mr. McGregor hot on his heels.
Peter darted left, then right, his tiny paws skidding in the soil. He wriggled under a gate, only to find himself tangled in a net. Panic set in as the farmer approached. With all his might, Peter twisted free, leaving his blue jacket behind. He raced through the garden, diving into a watering can to catch his breath.
Finally, spotting the gate, Peter dashed out, heart pounding. He didn’t stop running until he reached home. He collapsed on the floor, exhausted and jacket-less.
When Mrs. Rabbit returned, she scolded Peter gently. “No supper for you tonight, my dear. You’ll learn to listen next time.” Peter went to bed with a tummy ache and a valuable lesson about staying out of trouble.
Meanwhile, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail enjoyed their blackberry supper. And as the stars twinkled overhead, all the little rabbits nestled into their burrow, dreaming of safe adventures.
